Music cart vendor kills co-worker in row over hammock
A row between two music cart operators, reportedly over who should sleep in a hammock, ended

with one man stabbing the other to death shortly after 02.30 hrs yesterday at the City Electronics and Recording Bar at Lot 9 Camp Street.
However, it went unnoticed until about 6:30 hours when a resident of the premises spotted the suspect, identified as Qunicy Massay, washing blood from the concrete in the yard and he admitted that he was washing away some blood.
Police said that the 25-year-old suspect, who has a history of mental illness, stabbed his colleague in the stomach. The victim, reportedly also 25, and known only as ‘Fine Man’, fled to the back of the premises where he collapsed.
Massay had recently completed a stint in the Camp Street jail and was invited to the music cart operation by the man he later killed. He reportedly told the police that he killed Fine Man.
He made no attempt to escape and was taken into custody at the scene. Police also retrieved a large knife from the suspect.
A police release stated that the deceased appears to be in his early twenties, of dark complexion, and about five feet seven inches in height and had his hair in plaits.
None of the occupants who lived in the upper flat knew what had transpired until one of the residents came downstairs and saw the suspect attempting to sweep the blood away.
Kaieteur News understands that the music cart operator then explained that he had killed his colleague. Residents found the victim’s body near a fence at the back of the building. Kaieteur News understands that the detained man told police that he stabbed his colleague after the victim attacked him with an ice pick.
He also reportedly complained that the other push cart vendor did not want him to sleep in a hammock on the premises.
The owner of the City Electronics and Recording Bar explained that the killer and victim would operate their push-carts by day and sleep on the premises at night. Kaieteur News was told that the men would normally take turns sleeping in the hammock, which is reportedly owned by the victim. A resident recalled passing the two men at around midnight and seeing the suspect sleeping in the hammock while the other man was sleeping on the ground.
Both men had only recently begun working at the Camp Street establishment.
Police said that the suspect claimed that he was sleeping on a piece of tarpaulin he had spread on the ground when the other employee began to curse him and attacked him with an ice-pick. He reportedly told investigators that he retaliated by stabbing his assailant in the stomach.
“He claimed that if he had a phone he would have called for help because he felt sorry for the other man,” a source said.
Kaieteur News was told that the suspect lived on the streets and was often picked up by the police.
The owner of the establishment said both men were quiet individuals. He said that the suspect was an excellent worker who could be trusted with financial transactions, but who also occasionally showed signs of mental illness.
The owner said that he recently took away a cutlass from the worker and saw him with a large knife a few days later.
