Veracruz, Mexico – The Guyana women’s squash team yesterday claimed Guyana’s second
medal at the CAC Games here. The ladies clinched a spot in the semi-finals against Mexico and are assured of at least a bronze medal, but the ladies were hoping to do better than that last night.
Yesterday morning the ladies finished off their pool play against arch rival Barbados with a spot in the medal round on the line. With the order of play being 1, 3, 2, it meant that Ashley Khalil was first on to face reigning Caribbean Champion Karen Meakins. Khalil put up a valiant fight before going down to the experienced Meakins by a three games to one score.
Ashley DeGroot was next on court, looking to tie things up, and after a nervous start, she went on to beat Alex Jordan in three straight games to level the tie at one match each. It was then left up to the US College player from Drexel University, Mary Fung A Fat to take Guyana to their second medal of these games. She did that is convincing fashion by whipping Nadia McCarthy in three games to send the Guyana team to the podium.
The Men’s squash team also completed their pool play beating the British Virgin Islands (BVI) two matches to one. Guyana’s lone loss was by Alex Arjoon to touring professional Joe Chapman in three tight games. Sunil Seth and Jason Ray Khalil won their matches in convincing fashion to send the team to the top of their pool. They have drawn a strong Jamaican Team in the quarterfinals of the knock out stage. Should they win this tie, they will secure Guyana’s third medal.
Meanwhile, Guyana started its campaign in the team events with a bronze medal in the Ladies Doubles on Wednesday. The Guyanese women who are grouped in Pool B with #2 seeds Columbia, Jamaica and Barbados, were first in action against Jamaica. On court first was Ashley Khalil against Caribbean U17 Champion Alyssa Mullings and after overcoming a slow start, won in three games. Mary Fung-A-Fat followed her on court to play Tracy Binnie who she quickly dispatched in methodical fashion.
With Guyana already clinching the tie, bronze medallist Ashley DeGroot looked to finish off the Jamaicans in style. However, her opponent Mary Jo Mahfood had other ideas. DeGroot, feeling the effects of her second full week of competition after competing with the National Hockey team earlier in these games, dug in and managed to pull the win in five games, giving Guyana the sweep.
With a two and half hour break the ladies were again on court, against Columbia. Columbia, whose line up boasts the Silver and Bronze medal winners from the individual event, was always going to be a challenge for the ladies from the land of many waters. Despite a valiant effort by all three ladies, they went down by a three love score. They take on Barbados in their final pool match which can be considered a virtual medal match as the winner will be guaranteed at least a bronze medal. (Top two in each pool advance to the medal round)
The Guyanese men’s squash team started off the team event of the CAC Games with a clean sweep of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was not very easy facing a determined St. Vincent team but it was a welcome result after they had created a minor upset of British Virgin Islands in the morning session.
