The 2014 New Building Society Second Division 40-Over Cricket Competition, after months of intense battles involving
nearly one hundred teams from across Berbice has now reached its climax with the final between Corriverton and D’Edward scheduled for tomorrow at the No. 69 Vikings Ground on the Upper Corentyne.
With both teams unbeaten so far in the competition, it’s anyone’s guess which will emerge as this year’s champions. D’Edward have a formidable batting line up including four hard hitting batsmen in former Berbice all-rounder Eon Abel, Heeralall Bridgelall, Lakeraj Sookra and Jaipaul Heeralall who Corriverton will have to rein in early. They will be backed up by former Berbice Under-19 all-rounder Kevon Jawahir, Devendra Lalsa and Mahadeo Persaud.
Their two opening medium pacers Christian France and Navin Rampersaud have proven to be very difficult to score off and at the same time, wicket takers. Also crucial are right arm leg-spinner Kevon Jawahir and off spinners Abel and Sookra. Devendra Singh and Bridgelall will lend support with their medium pacers.
The Corriverton batting will be spearheaded by opening batsman Jeremy Moore who recently scored a match winning 98 against Cotton Tree Die Hard in their semi-final as well as Claven Beresford, Anthony Seeraj, Errol Byass, Jermain Reid and Imran Jabbar.
Their opening pacers Jermain Reid and Victor Pedro have been consistently lethal in this competition but it was the off spin of Eric Phillips that destroyed many teams so far. Backing up would be left arm spinner Farad Bacchus and medium pacers Beresford, Byass and Amzad Alpplesammy.
Representatives from the New Building Society Limited will be there to meet the players and officials before the game.
The umpires nominated are Augustus Outar and Moses Ramphal with Omadat Samaroo the standby.
The match is scheduled to start at 11:00am tomorrow.
Meanwhile in the last semi-final, Corriverton completed a successful run chase of what seemed like a challenging target
to beat Cotton Tree Die Hard by 3 wickets to earn their place in the final.
At the Cotton Tree Grand in West Berbice, the game was reduced to 37 overs a side because of a late start due to rain. Cotton Tree Die Hard soon found themselves 19 for 3. Permaul Singh and Abdul Subhan staged a recovery of sorts by putting on 33 for the 4th wicket but with both of them falling shortly after that, it became 56 for 5 and then 76 for 6.
Romain Boodram, who had scored an even 100 not out against Chesney in the play-off, took charge putting on 53 for the 7th wicket with Ishwar Singh (7) and 71 for the 8th wicket with Nashad Gafoor (16) before he fell for 119 at 200 for 8. His knock included 9 fours and 11 sixes. Cotton Tree Die Hard went on to make a pretty decent 216 all out in 36.5 overs. Bowling for Corriverton, Faoud Bacchus took 3 for 14 and Jermain Reid 2 for 41.
When Corriverton responded, they were given a start of 32 runs by Jeremy Moore and Errol Byass (6) and after Byass left, Moore put another 30 from the 2nd wicket with Imran Jabbar (8). Two quick wickets fell and they were 63 for 3. They further slipped to 97 for 5 at which Moore had to retire hurt. After Jermain Reid and Amzad Applesammy put on 61 for the 6th wicket, Applesammy fell for 25 and Moore returned and he and Reid put on a further 66 for the 7th wicket after which Reid fell for 49 at 197 for 7.
Moore carried on to see Corriverton to 220 for 7 in 32.5 overs. Moore was on 98 not out at the end, a knock which included 11 fours and 5 sixes.
