A new soldier of the Guyana Defence Force, Alistair Woolford. of the Guyana Defence Force who is accused of shooting a man, stood before Magistrate Ann McLennan to face an attempted murder charge against him yesterday morning at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on November 21, at D’Andrade Street, Kitty, Alistair Woolford discharged a loaded firearm with intent to murder Devon Howell. The matter was indictable and Woolford was therefore not required to plead.
Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones said that the victim is known to the accused and is still in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) where he was admitted on the day of the incident.
Woolford was represented by Attorney-at-Law Hewley Griffith who told the court that his client is 20 years old, a private of the Guyana Defence force and resides at 100 Garnett Street, Kitty. Griffith added that Woolford has no prior arrest or conviction and does not pose a flight risk; for all those reasons his representative requested reasonable bail.
Prosecutor Jones objected to bail. He also said that if the defendant, Woolford, was to be granted bail that there is a chance he won’t return and that he might tamper with the victim.
Magistrate Ann McLennan upheld the prosecutor’s objection to bail and Woolford was subsequently remanded.
Kaieteur News understands that the police have still not been able to confirm if Howell was robbed during the incident.
According to the wounded man’s mother, Allison Howell, she received a phone call from her mother, Desiree Howell, who informed her that “Devon was shot and is at the hospital” on Friday.
The tearful mother noted that her son usually “plays Nintendo with his friends” at the residence where he was shot. The matter will be heard before Magistrate Judy Latchman on December 2.
