Commander of the Police ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken has urged that members of the public should not get confrontational
with ranks if they feel that they are not being afforded the satisfaction they legitimately deserve.
Hicken, who two Mondays ago, delivered his plan to police the city through the current festive season and beyond, is urging citizens to make use of the recourse provided by the police, which is to contact senior officers via personal cellular phone numbers provided at the stations, and which are now being made public.
This posture of making public the cellular phone numbers of senior police officers throughout the country is the brainchild of Commissioner of Police (ag) Seelall Persaud, and has been welcomed by many.
“This situation has been working well for us,” Commander Hicken told this newspaper yesterday.
It has been observed that at every police station, a notice board has been erected on which is placed the photograph of the station sergeant, along with crime tips, information about what the members of the public are to expect from the police as well as the rights of prisoners.
The notice board also contains the cellular phone numbers of the Commander and his deputy, the District Detective Officer and the Sub-Divisional Officer.
According to Hicken, the move is creating an atmosphere for members of the public to have recourse whenever there is any misconduct by ranks they encounter, particularly at the station.
“I will continue to advocate at this level that if you go to station, and for some reason or the other, based on your interpretation, the police did not give you the satisfaction you need in terms of addressing your problem, don’t get confrontational with the police because that will escalate the problem,” the Commander stated.
He added that by taking this approach, an environment is being created whereby the police and members of the public can get along better with each other.
Yesterday, the police force through its public relations office issued a list with the cellular phone numbers of all the Divisional Commanders and the officers below them, including all Divisional Traffic Officers.
Hicken, speaking for his division, told this newspaper that members of the public can contact him and his officers any time of the day or night.
“While we’re gonna increase our efficiency through this process, we expect you to avoid getting into confrontation with the police at the lower level, seeing that you can meet the commander and all his officers at their level,” Hicken stated, adding that all reports are treated with utmost seriousness.
But some officers are not too keen on the move, claiming that the privilege could be abused by citizens.
“There are people who might get stopped by the police in the wee hours of the morning, and because they have our direct numbers they might want to call us at that hour. For me, if I feel like answering, I will, and if I don’t feel like answering at those hours, I won’t,” one officer told this newspaper.
Below is a list of contact telephone numbers for police officers.

Well I do hope they answer the phone when it rings. We can have all the numbers and yet be ignored. Can’t even have an efficient 999 service.
