Guyanese distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade defended the Suriname Marathon title he won last year
on Saturday when he obliterated the field to win the grueling 26.2 miles contest in 2h:57m which was ten minutes ahead of the next finisher in the race.
“It was a challenge for me, because I was not at the start line when the race ran off and secondly, I’m recovering from Chick V (Chickungunya Virus). So I really struggled, but I’m happy to have defended my title and that was my goal going into this Marathon,” D’Andrade, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
The athlete, who is a regular feature in Trinidad and Tobago, said that he would like to thank his sponsor, Builders Lumber Yard for always supporting him. D’Andrade said that the race more or less brings the curtain down on what has been a successful season.
Sykerio Simison was second in the open category of Marathon in 3h:04m and Guillermo Udenhout third in 3h:07m to round out the top three. The race had three other Guyanese male, which included Winston Missigher, who placed sixth as Lindon Harrison and Llwellyn Gardner, finished ninth and 10th respectively but won their Masters’ groups.
In the women’s race, two Guyanese finished in the top three. Marlet Carolien of the Netherlands won in 3h:29m while Guyanese Euleen Josiah-Tanner (3h:41m) and Cyrleen Phillips (4h:09m) finished in the second and third positions respectively.
