– PM reveals head, neck injuries
Police have reviewed a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera recording that shows a man running behind maintenance worker Chris Jacob, some hours before he turned up dead in a reservoir at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri.
The man is said to be a friend of Jacob’s, and police are said to be questioning him, although Kaieteur News understands that he is not yet being treated as a suspect. He is reportedly not a CJIA employee, but has a relative who works there.
The new development comes even as a post mortem revealed that the 26-year-old sustained injuries to the back of the head and to the neck. A police official said that cause of death was given as “suffocation by drowning,” while explaining that further investigation has to be done to ascertain whether Jacob was the victim of foul play.
Kaieteur News was told on Monday that police had questioned two CJIA employees at the Timehri Police Station in connection with Jacob’s demise. However, a CJIA spokesperson said that while police would have questioned some employees, no staffer was detained.
“As far as I am aware no CJIA employee was ever in custody,” the official told Kaieteur News.
Information reaching Kaieteur News indicates that Jacob, 26, of Hauraruni Village, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, may have met his death shortly after an altercation that occurred at around 23:00 hrs on Saturday.
Kaieteur News understands that Jacob was at a party in the airport’s maintenance area, when he attempted to fondle a female employee. According to sources, the woman slapped Jacob, who attempted to hit her with a louvre pane.
Two employees reportedly restrained him, and the police were notified. It is alleged that on learning that he might be arrested, Jacob fled in the direction of a reservoir and the employees lost sight of him. He was found dead in the reservoir the following day.
A release issued on Sunday stated that Jacob was discovered “apparently drowned” in the reservoir at around 13:30 hrs on Sunday after being involved in a reported assault and a resulting altercation at 23:00hrs on Saturday in the Works Maintenance area.
An official said that two senior probation officers from the Ministry of Labour and Human Services held counseling sessions yesterday with some employees and Jacob’s close friends.
