After going 22 days in Road Safety Month without a fatal accident, Berbice recorded its third
death in two days.
A horrific motor car accident on the Betsy Ground Public road around 13:30 hrs on Monday, claimed the life of Mahendra Jugisteer, 30, a cane cutter, of Lot 43 Bristol Street, Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice. Jugisteer was the father of two, ages three and one.
According to reports, about 13:30 hrs, Jugisteer was a passenger in the vehicle PFF 556 which was being driven by his cousin Davendra Bakridi 25 of Adelphi East Canje, Berbice. He was travelling at a fast rate of speed along the East Canje Public road, when in the vicinity of Betsy Ground he lost control and ended up off the road. It hit a road sign before continuing for about 20 meters to broadside a parked trailer before ending on its side at the side of the road.
The two occupants were thrown from the vehicle. Jugisteer was lying on the ground and appeared to be seriously injured. The men were picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Jugisteer was pronounced dead on arrival.
Bakridi was subsequently taken into custody.
According to Jugisteer’s wife, Rada Jugisteer, her husband of over seven years was not required to work on that day and left home around 06:00 hrs. She said that he left with his bird cage to go on the road. The woman stated that she was at home when she received a call stating that her husband was involved in an accident. She said by the time she ventured to the road her husband was already removed and taken to the hospital where her worst fears were realized.
His mother, Ishwantie Jugisteer, stated that she last saw her son early the morning when he visited her and ate a roti. He stayed a while; spoke with her and his father, Takur Persaud Jugisteer, before leaving
to go home. She was at home when she received a phone call that her son was involved in an accident and was lying on the road.
By the time she ventured out he was already taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital. They caught a car and raced to the hospital where they learnt that he died.
The driver Bakridi told the police that whilst driving he tried to swerve from a dog and his cousin (Jugisteer) pulled the steering wheel in the opposite direction forcing him to lose control.
The road fatality figure in Berbice has climbed to 24, compared to 22 from a similar number of accidents for the corresponding period last year.
