A 40-year-old gold miner accused of taking a cutlass and chopping an acquaintance during a dispute over stolen
gold was yesterday placed on $90,000 bail on a wounding charge before city Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Michael Douglas, of 111 Miles Mahdia, Region Eight, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Deon Giles on Monday at 111 Miles Mahdia.
Douglas pleaded not guilty to the charge and an application for reasonable bail was submitted for the gold miner by his lawyer, Adrian Thompson.
Thompson told the court that Douglas also received injuries and had lost a tooth as a result of the dispute with his acquaintance. He said that Giles may also be charged in the matter. The lawyer contended that Douglas was not a flight risk and added that he will attend trial. Douglas, he said, would be willing to subject to any conditions the court deems necessary for bail.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth, explained that on Tuesday, Giles borrowed a torch that is used to melt gold from Douglas. He said that Douglas alleged that Giles stole some gold from him and they had an argument.
The argument, he said, escalated to a fight and the defendant pulled a cutlass and chopped Giles on his left hand. The matter was reported and further investigations led to him being charged.
The Prosecution did not oppose bail. He requested that the matter be transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was granted and the matter was sent before Magistrate Ann McLennan for report on today’s date.
