UNICOMER, the parent company of Courts, the Caribbean’s largest furniture, appliance
and electrical engineering retailer, has expanded its operation in Guyana.
The furniture giant has opened a new state of the art distribution centre at Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara.
The 60,000 square foot, fully automated facility, constructed at a cost of US$6M, was commissioned yesterday.
Among those present were President Donald Ramotar, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali, Managing Director UNICOMER Guyana, Clyde de Haas and Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President, UNICOMER Group, Guillermo Siman.
The President lauded UNICOMER (Guyana) for the initiative. He noted the resilience at a time when many are trying to turn away investors.
The East Bank Demerara centre that has the capacity to provide much needed storage is the replacement for the existing distribution centre at Montrose, East Coast Demerara which was no longer able to sufficiently manage the company’s storage, a Government release said.
President Ramotar who delivered the feature address declared the investment, another demonstration of investors’ confidence in the Guyanese economy.
“This is extremely important for our country and it also speaks volumes. The whole idea in Guyana
is to try to make us a very modern and developed society. I have said before, and I believe I have enough in me left to witness Guyana being the middle income country that it is being described as today to being in the not too distant future as a developing country.”
President Ramotar noted that this has been of great concern for the administration, which has been placing significant emphasis over the years on ensuring it puts programmes in place to ensure that the workforce is highly educated and skilled.
Government has sought to ensure it attracts the right type of investors who will make certain that this newly skilled workforce has avenues for employment.
“If you make a perusal of our budget, you will see where our emphasis is in this regard. Our largest expense is on the social sector and education takes the biggest bite out of that…We also have the health sector, and we are beginning now to see that this is having a positive impact on the society,” the President pointed out.
The President assured UNICOMER that his government is still committed to realising the hydropower initiative which has suffered a number of setbacks. “We are still determined to have that facility to provide that to a strong manufacturing sector and we will.”
He reiterated that government is aware that cheap and reliable fuel is a major impediment to businesses across the country.
Meanwhile, Minister Ashni Singh said that the inauguration of the distribution centre reflects Guyana as an attractive place for investment for the large regional companies.
The Finance Minister pointed out that UNICOMER would not have increased its capacity in the country if it was not optimistic about Guyana’s future. He noted that the furniture company’s confidence is even more telling, for the reason that it has sought to expand its operation in Guyana, despite the political fighting.
The Minister said that this is because the company sees the transformation that the country has and is going through. “…The truth is, often times the changes that we undergo are often time not evident to us. W do not see the transformation in our country… because we are busy. The transformation that is taking place is not evident to us. Sometimes it takes the benefit of distance to see the magnitude of this change,” the Finance Minister said.
The Minister said that every day there are thousands of homes and dozens of businesses being built in the country and more investors coming.
“We must applaud ourselves as a country, for our achievement in rebuilding Guyana that the world and region are now confident in putting their money in the country,” Minister Singh said.
