competition at its Head Office in Beterverwagting yesterday morning.
Public Relations Officer, Darshnie Yussuf said that the competition continues to be amazing for the company and expressed continued commitment towards the venture. “It shows you that we are committed, that we are here to support entertainment, to support culture and to support music”.
Yussuf said that such competitions have set the foundation for aspiring artistes, adding that not only does it give them the opportunity to showcase their skills but helps to launch them into the music industry. “Many of the Soca music artistes can tell you that they started with ‘Carib Soca Monarch,’ so that makes us very proud to know that we have been able to contribute to something like that.”
Reigning Carib Soca Monarch, Kwesi Ace, who was present at the press meeting, told the media that he will be heading to Trinidad & Tobago to participate in the Soca competition.
Ace described it as an honour to be representing his country as a musical ambassador. “It is not a difficult task because I am going at a disadvantage being that I am going to a foreign port. I would like the whole of the Guyanese community to rally around me… and once you give me that support I will definitely go out there and do my best to my ability”. He also promised that his performance will be different, innovative and creative.
The semi-finals of the local Soca Monarch competition will be held on January 31, 2015 in Berbice, while finals are set to take place on February 14th at the National Park, Georgetown.
The prize money will remain the same as last year; 1.5 million dollars first prize, $500,000 for second place and $250,000 for third place. Additionally, there will also be a People’s Choice Award, one that will involve a ‘texting segment’.
Carib Brand Ambassador, Richard Singh said that prior to the competition a lot of interactive activities will be held with customers and artists. This includes ticket giveaways at selected bars, and customers will also have an opportunity to call into radio and television programmes to win prizes. “It will be really cool, really fun and really interactive” said Singh.
Entry forms are available at the Mashramani Secretariat located in the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports building on Main Street, Georgetown and at the ANSA McAL Trading Ltd Head Office, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
Coordinator of the Carib Soca Monarch Nigel Worrell, said that it is important for artistes to remember that all entries must be in by January 5, 2015.
