A suspect has been held for questioning in relation to the fire at the Robb and King Streets,
property, in which two teenage sisters perished. Another man, said to be an employee of the suspect, was also arrested by city law enforcement officers when he turned up at the police station to take food for his employer.
When the blaze erupted in the city’s centre early Monday morning, by the time the smoke had cleared and most of the fire was under control, the charred remains of 15-year-old Theresa Rozario and her 12-year-old sister Feresa, were discovered among the rubble.
The girls were living at the property for years with their father, Hilrod Randolph Thomas, who also sustained what is said to be serious injuries as a result of the fire.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect was detained by the police before midday on Monday. It was stated that the police, cognizant of reports that the fire may have been deliberately set, apprehended the suspect because he had some connection to the burnt out building.
Attorney–at–law Glenn Hanoman confirmed that he was contacted by the suspect and he is currently looking into the matter. Hanoman noted, however, that he is allowing the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
He confirmed further, that the suspect is indeed responsible for the now burnt out property since its original owner would have passed away. He added that while reports would have stated that Thomas, who is now nursing injuries at the public hospital, is the owner of the property, he is not. Hanoman said his instructions are that the man was trespassing on the property.
In the meantime, Hanoman said he is awaiting the police’s position on the matter since he is aware that they are investigating arson, while the fire service has not released a report on the cause of the blaze. He said a lot of questions also need to be asked about the property and its flammability.
Seventeen-year-old Zamara Dillon told Kaieteur News yesterday that Thomas seemed to showing improvement since the mother of the deceased girls had gone to visit him. She had told the newspaper that the man did not seem to have remembered what occurred.
In the wee hours of Monday morning, persons on the street claimed to have seen two men who exited a roaming vehicle set fire to the building. The eyewitness said the men made two attempts to burn the places before it caught.
The publication was told that the father and his daughters appeared to be asleep when the blaze started. They believe that the girls got trapped in the heavily grilled property, but the father managed to escape by jumping through a window adding more injuries to that which he sustained by fire.
The publication was told that a previous attempt was made to burn down the property a few years ago and while no one was hurt and the property was not destroyed, the father continued to occupy the property with his daughters.
Monday’s fire was claimed to be another attempt to get Thomas to vacate the property which is located in a prime commercial location.
