A pregnant woman and two men were remanded on a drug trafficking charge when they appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Latoya Osborne, Ziggy Webster and Julius Joyce all pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged that on November 14 at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, they had in their possession of 257 grammes of marijuana (cannabis sativa) for the purpose of trafficking.
A bail application was made by Attorney-At-Law Paul Fung-A-Fat. He said that Webster is 22 years old, and the common-law husband of Osborne who is 19 and three months pregnant. They both reside at Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara.
Joyce was apparently a visitor of the home where the bust occurred and not its owner, the court heard.
Fung-A-Fat also said that many persons had access to the premises and that there was no evidence against his clients.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones said that on the day in question, a party of police ranks went to an address at Middle Road la Penitence where the defendants were ‘busted’ while parceling off the narcotics.
When Magistrate McLennan asked if the prosecutor had any objections to bail he responded by saying that “no special reasons were given”.
Joyce told the Magistrate he was at home sleeping when his friend called and asked him to come and visit at the address where the alleged bust took place. He further stated that he went to the home, and half an hour later police arrived and arrested the three of them. Joyce also noted that he doesn’t know anyone that lives in the house.
All the facts were heard and the accused were remanded until November 24 when they will appear before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
