Just two weeks after buying his Toyota Spacio, taxi driver Sharif Mohamed was forced to flee from his vehicle after a gun-toting carjacker attacked him at around 20:45 hrs on Monday.
Mohamed works with an Eleventh Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara taxi service and said that the incident occurred a few yards from his place of employment.
The driver said that he was sitting in his vehicle, PSS9658, and taking a call on his cell phone, when a man came up and snatched his phone.
“I snatch back my phone and say ‘what happen’ and then the man pull a gun,” Mohamed said.
Warning his victim not to look into his face, the robber first ordered Mohamed to exit the car, but then told him to shift over to the front passenger seat.
Instead, the driver opened his front door and fled. The armed man then escaped in the stolen car.
Mohamed said that he bought the vehicle two weeks ago and is still making down payments.
Kaieteur News was told that members of the Grove/Diamond Community Policing Group were patrolling at the time and attempted to follow the carjacker. However, the group members retreated because they were unarmed.
There has been an upsurge of robberies and burglaries in the Diamond Housing Scheme and officials of the Home Affairs Ministry are to meet next Saturday with residents to listen to their complaints.
