Last week President Donald Ramotar exuded great confidence that he will be running as Presidential candidate for the
People’s Progressive Party (PPP) come next General Elections. The impression given by Mr. Ramotar is that this has already been decided. But that is apparently not the case.
According to PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee, there is still an existing possibility that the Party will have a new presidential candidate.
As he hosted the Party’s weekly press conference on Monday last, Rohee was questioned about the President’s confidence that he will run another term. The General Secretary responded that he has no difficulty accepting the statements being made by President Ramotar as the President “has a right to be confident.” However, Rohee noted that “as I said before, no decision has been made by the leadership of the party in that respect.”
Rohee said that he noticed that that question is asked regularly at recent press conferences and he is wary of a possibility that it is meant “to split things up or put people against each other.”
When asked if he would accept nomination to be Presidential candidate, Rohee responded “the leadership of the party haven’t discussed the matter as yet….I am the General Secretary now and I work to keep unity in the party so I am not prepared as General Secretary to make any pronouncements.” He added that when the time comes for him to say whether he is interested, he will.
Touching again on the President’s confidence, Rohee said, “The most I can say to that is that I wish the President well to pursuing the re-nomination to be candidate of the PPP…I wish him well.
Questioned about the delay in making such a decision as to who will be the Party’s next Presidential Candidate, given the
political climate, Rohee responded, “We set our own agenda and deal with something when we feel like dealing with it. We are not going to allow ourselves to be led by the media or let the media set the flavour of the day.”
He said that for the PPP, selecting a Presidential candidate is not a priority. Rohee told the media that the Party’s priority is to engage the Alliance For Change and A Partnership for National Unity meaningfully to address parliamentary issues.
The General Secretary said that as soon as the PPP makes a decision as to who will be the next Presidential candidate, it will send out a statement.
