The event was staged last Sunday the inaugural edition of the 5K King Medas Classic/Pansy Adonis Memorial Athletics meet. The promoters are heartened by the response from the athletes as well as the spectators and are bent on making the 2nd edition an even bigger event.
Consequently, Andy Medas King, the man whose initiative and hard work brought the initiative to fruition, is appealing to corporate Guyana’s input for a more flamboyant meet when activities get underway November next year.
In all, there were 10 events and Alika Morgan and Cleveland Thomas had captured the honours in the 5K Senior over-20, female and male categories respectively, while several other local runners dominated the other categories 20yrs and under,16-13yrs and 13 years and under.
Activities had commenced at several venues and the 3K had commenced at Nabaclis ECD, while the 5K and other events commenced at Belfield. Important, athletes finishing in the top 10 were given scholarships ranging from $500-$20,000 plus trophies. Mr. King said that his group is desirous of doling out more lucrative scholarships and consequently is appealing to the corporate community to realize this objective.
Mr. King is a former athlete who represented GuySuco during the days of the highly acclaimed Inter Corporation games when the level of performance was very high. He had competed at those games in the 100, 200 and 400 meters events. He said that he wishes to see local athletes attain such standards before moving on to world acclaim. “This is an opportunity for local athletes to attain new heights and I am confident that they could do so while participating in this meet,” affirmed Mr. King.
He also has a young daughter, Kcaysha Medas-King, who has been turning heads in the United States in the sprint and middle distances. The U-12 athlete has been a feature at meets in the US Schools Track system, winning and or placing in the top bracket on events sanctioned by the United States Track and Field body USATF.
