Celebrations were held in Diamond Housing Scheme for Doric Bender who, yesterday, welcomed his 100th birth anniversary.
Bender was born on November 15, 1914 in the Solitude Estate located on the Upper Berbice River. At the time the world was being plunged into its first Great War.
The centenarian then lived the majority of his adventurous life in Morgenstond, Berbice. He moved to Georgetown at the age of 90.
A talented musician, he is the eldest of three children. His siblings are Rebecca and Lelleth Bender. He was married twice, first to the late Muriel Bender and then to Inez Bender.
He fathered seven children: Dennis and Vilma, both deceased, Norma, Doric Jr., Cecelia, Elijah Bender and Enid Johnson.
Bender’s children said that he has always had a daring enthusiasm for life, with the many adventures he’s been part of in the past 100 years. He would reveal his riveting experiences in the form of stories which he loved to tell.
Living in Berbice, Bender made a living as a humble farmer, learning to play both the flute and guitar. As an avid follower of boxing, he even managed to learn some moves in his younger days.
The birth anniversary was commemorated with a simple thanksgiving ceremony, organized by his children and hosted by Norma Bender. In attendance were family and church members with the service presided over by Pastor Elton Lindie.
Also commemorating the occasion was the Lion’s Club of Diamond/Grove who donated a hamper to the new centenarian.
