An employee of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission faced four separate charges in relation to an accident that resulted in the death of Jevon Bellamy.
Sampson Pereira appeared before the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday last to face the charges – causing death by dangerous driving, failing to render assistance to an injured person, failing to stop after an accident and having tinted windows thereby obstructing persons from identifying him.
It is alleged that on November 10, last, at Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while driving at a fast rate of speed in the vicinity of the National Stadium, the defendant collided with a pedestrian who was waiting to cross the road. The victim was hurled 115 feet away.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that the defendant did not stop or assist the injured man. Public spirited persons took the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The accused drove his motor car (PJJ7632) away and proceeded to Mocha where he resides. After receiving information police went to his home around 4:00hrs told the man of the offence and then arrested him.
Pereira pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and having tint to obstruct a person’s vision from identifying him. But he pleaded guilty to not stopping and to failing to assist the injured at the time of the accident.
He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson who told the court that his client only fled because he panicked. He further noted that his client is not a passport holder, has a fixed place of abode in Mocha and a stable job for the past six years.
Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence; a person died, the defendant did not stop or render assistance, and did not see it fit to report the matter to the police.
Statements were ordered to be filed on November 28 and the matter has been transferred to Court 5, where the accused will appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
