The father of the six-year-old boy, who was killed in an accident at Parika last Sunday, is again insisting that he was holding the child’s hand when the vehicle struck him.
Police have stated that Saheed Yusuf of Farm, East Bank Essequibo, was struck by a car after he ran out onto the roadway near Parika. Some media reports also claim that the child was fatally injured when he ran out of a yard to a passing ice cream van.
But the boy’s father, Mohamed Yusuf, has repeatedly refuted this report.
According to Mr. Yusuf, he had taken his son out on the roadway to buy ice-cream. After making the purchase, Mr. Yusuf alleged that he was holding the child’s right hand while standing near a pedestrian crossing when an approaching driver signaled for them to cross.
Still holding his son’s hand, but with the child leading, the father said that they were crossing the road when another car, which was also coming from the direction of Georgetown, struck his son.
“We were crossing the road together…and he (the driver) knock the child out of my hand,” Mr. Yusuf said. “He almost knock both of we.”
Kaieteur News was told that the driver stopped some distance away, while Mr. Yusuf took his son to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.
Police subsequently detained the driver.
Mr. Yusuf said that he had not provided the police with a statement, since he was waiting for his son to be buried. The child was laid to rest yesterday. The father said that he would give the police a statement today.
