Knocked out in 10th round
By Michael Benjamin
He put up a spirited fight but in the end it was just not enough and Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell
succumbed by a 10th round knockout to Australian pugilist, Kye ‘Mr Frenzy’ Mackenzie, when the two faced off for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Super Featherweight titles at the Hisense Arena, Melbourne Victoria Australia, early yesterday morning (local time).
A wicked two fisted attack that commenced with a right cross and culminated with a left hook at 1:11secs of the tenth round landed on Atwell’s jaw and sent him reeling to the ropes near the red corner. He did not fall but was struggling to maintain an upright position when the referee jumped in and waved off the proceedings without even bothering to institute the mandatory 8 count.
Indeed, for the most part of the decisive round Atwell was on the receiving end as Mackenzie, the rangier of the two fighters, utilized the jabs to full advantage before following up with wicked right crosses. Both of Atwell’s eyes were swollen, evidence of the gruelling encounter, while Mackenzie sported a slightly blackened eye.
It was a disappointing gift for Atwell who celebrated his 26th birth anniversary one day prior to the bout. His record dips to 12 wins with 2 losses and one draw. Mackenzie retains his unbeaten streak after 13 fights; eleven of them finished inside the distance. Further, Mackenzie’s last 8 bouts all finished inside the distance and he now sports a knockout ratio of 84.62 percent.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport attempted to get a comment from Atwell but Gary ‘Superman’ St Clair said that he was tired and was resting in his hotel room. Asked to comment on the fight, St Clair, the former IBF and IBO jnr/lightweight champion, said that he was still disappointed with the stoppage. He also said that he was not in a frame of mind to engage in an analysis at that time.
