Dear Editor,
It is now clearer than ever that we are dealing with a desperate Government, one that is willing to pull out all stops to hold on to power at all costs.
Recent developments in Guyana have established a trend of not only denials, but a systematic breakdown of respect for laws, for the people and for the country. In the midst of it all, the Opposition seems clueless on how to tackle what is surely emerging to be a clear dictatorship of our country.
From the onset let me say that when Donald Ramotar was sworn in late 2011 to become President, there was a sigh of relief that the dark days of Bharrat Jagdeo was over. Little did Guyana know that the more things change, the more they remained the same.
Not only did Ramotar fail to live up to the expectations that at last a decent man was in the State House, he has also made true his promise that his administration was one of continuity–continuing what Jagdeo had started to do to the people of Guyana.Together with a few rogue ministers, Jagdeo’s influence and iron-grip on the administration remained very evident in face of a rubber-stamp President.
One by one, the many deals by Jagdeo have started to fall apart at the seams. In so doing, a chosen few have alarmingly snatched control of key sectors like telecommunication, drug supply, media houses, and even transportation…Berbice Bridge.
Let me say that I do believe sincerely that 60 percent of the monies that the state spends ends back in bribes and kickbacks to corrupt officials. Overpricing, backroom deals and laxity from corrupt engineers have all been contributing to where we are. Immediate evidence is our roads. Less than one year after the big hype of a $60M road, the poor quality work becomes evident. How could this be if there is supervision?
We now come to that now infamous audio tape made by Attorney General Anil Nandlall to a senior Kaieteur News journalist.
While the Government has attempted in vain to wiggle from the explosive revelations as contained in that almost 19 minutes of recording which saw threats made Kaieteur News, it is clear from their words that they have accepted it is what the Minister said.
In his recent statements, with the blessings of Donald Ramotar and his administration, the Attorney General, lived up to the trend set by Jagdeo…deny everything that hurts the party, even if it is the glaring truth.
In any other country, the Minister on his/her own accord would have stepped down. It would have been the right thing and the moral thing to do.
That tape went viral, making it one of those most debated issues in Guyana and probably the most embarrassing for the ruling party. Yet, despite the many things that have been pointed out as wrong in this tape, the PPP/C continues through its control of the state media and radio stations it handed to friends, to attempt to spin the situation.
It is not hard to imagine that Monday’s suspension of Parliament and attempts to place the Attorney General as part of the team to “hand” over those $10,000 grants to school children, was a lame attempt to repair the image of a party that has lost touch with the people of Guyana who are crying for real leadership, honesty and transparency.
Mr Editor, no amount of ghost writers in the state-owned Guyana Chronicle and Government-friendly media houses can cover the truth. The truth is the truth.
As the old people say, the boat done “gaan” a falls. It is therefore unforgivable that our religious organizations and leaders have remained so silent in face of these atrocities.
It hurts more when we look next door and see how one woman, TT’s own Kamla, firing 13 ministers during her reign. It was hard to do, she admits, but it was the correct thing to do.
Is our President more interested in power? Or is he ready to make the change, be the change that Guyana so desperately wants?
Abdul H.
