United States-based airline Dynamic Airways has managed to gain local approval to once again
operate direct flights between Georgetown and New York. The airline has fulfilled promises to return to Guyana before year end after overcoming a number of glitches when it commenced operations here earlier in the year.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has given the go-ahead to the company to commence service here by month end. Dynamic Airways’ local correspondent, Gerry Gouveia confirmed to Kaieteur News yesterday that the airline has received clearance from the local authorities to start operations by November 22.
Gouveia told the newspaper that Dynamic has lodged a bond with the GCAA and is supposed to renew permission annually. The company is currently allowed to conduct its services until June 9, 2015. Gouveia said approval was granted on Monday.
When Dynamic Airways commenced flights in Guyana for the first time in June of this year, they were forced to stop operations when denial by aviation operators at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), prevented them from landing and leaving via that facility.
The New York authorities had written to the company saying that the airline had a few outstanding documents to complete the requirements which allowed them to conduct their business. Dynamic Airways was then forced to take Guyanese passengers to other state airports – some several miles away- and then drive them to JFK.
The airline had told the Guyanese public that on the inaugural flight, the ground handler had caused a problem by placing two untagged bags on the flight to Guyana. This raised alarm bells, Gouveia had told the newspaper, and the company subsequently fired the ground handler. Firing the ground handler also caused the airline to lose its slot to land at the airport.
A few weeks after the company came on board in Guyana, it had asked the GCAA to rescind the operations licence as a result of the difficulties they were experiencing. GCAA in turn warned Dynamic Airways with a strong letter that should they return to operate in Guyana, they must have all relevant documents available and in order, Gouveia said.
“Dynamic Airways had to make sure therefore, that its documents are in order, and we are ready to go!” Gouveia assured. He said if the airline was not straight with the New York leg of the route, the GCAA would have never given them permission to operate.
Late last week, Director General of the GCAA had told Kaieteur News that Dynamic were at the time submitting their documents. He had stated that the airline was coming along with the documents that were required and would soon attain approval for its service.
Roraima Airways, which is owned and operated by Gouveia, is the local representative and ground-handling agent for Dynamic Airways. He had said during the airline welcoming ceremony that Dynamic would be working towards attaining flag carrier status. He said it is not a designation given to the airline but one that is earned. Gouveia had also assured the Guyanese public that Dynamic is here to stay, even after it fell out on the Guyanese leg.
Gouveia said that Dynamic will be operating non-scheduled flights, but the company is currently working on permission for scheduled operations. It had stated that it is hoping to have at least one Boeing 767 based in Guyana. Tickets are currently on sale at various travel agencies. (Zena Henry)
