GVF/Guyoil Tradewind Tankers Int. Volleyball Festival…Yelyco trounce Achievers to claim male title; Fr. Guiana beat Suriname for women’s crown

The Third annual Guyana Volleyball Federation/GUYOIL/Tradewind Tankers International Invitational Volleyball Festival ended last evening at the National Gymnasium with local side Achievers outplayed in the male final by Suriname’s Yelyco in straight sets.

Much was expected from the West Demerara based Achievers who had earlier defeated French Guiana and Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) like Yelyco to set up a final meeting. The Surinamese wasted no time in winning the title after suffering defeat in last year’s final to T&T’s Big Sepos; they won 25-13, 25-12, 25-11.
In the third place game, PMTC lost to French Guiana in four sets. The French side won the first 25-17, but PMTC rebounded to take the second 25-23 but surrendered the next two, 24-26, 23-25 despite some exhilarating exchanges.
Yelyco made a clean sweep of the individual awards; Keven Sporkslede won the Most Valuable Player and Best Attacker awards. Kurban Raftar was named Best Receiver and Dion Brunings Best Setter.
However, the female final between French Guiana and Yelyco was the match to witness as both teams played with heart and determination. The hungrier of the two eventually emerged as the champions and it was the French who toppled the Surinamese.
From the first set it was clear that neither team was going to lose without a fight, Yelyco, the defending champions were the odds on favorite to repeat but the French side had different ideas.
Yelyco won the first set 28-26, the score underlining the closeness of the exchanges. French Guiana returned the favours in the second to win 25-23 before Yelyco took the third 25-23. The fourth set was again another pulsating faceoff with no letting up on either side as the respective Coaches sought to keep their charges focused.

French Guiana eventually won 25-22 to draw level thus setting up the fifth and deciding set. This too was a thriller, throughout, it was any body’s game as both kept within striking distance of each other. French Guiana eventually won 18-16 to claim the top spot.
The individual awards were shared evenly with French Guiana’s Gerogina Marie Claire and Soria Pirisse taking the Most Valuable Player and Best Setter awards while Suriname’s Merville Sno and Janise Valise were named Best Receiver and Best Attack, respectively.
Guyana Volleyball Federation President John Flores in remarks at the presentation ceremony thanked all the teams especially the visitors for accepting the invitation to attend the festival which serves to help in the development of the sport in the Guiana’s. Also attending was immediate Past President of the GVF, Lennie Shuffler who assisted with the presentation of prizes.
Plaques of Appreciation were presented to the respective Coaches of the two visiting nations.
