Republic Bank Nets officially had the epithet, giant-slayers, conferred on them Saturday night at the Burnham Basketball Court when they bagged another huge win, this time over Georgetown’s number one ranked club, Trinity Grid Holdings Pacesetters.
GT Masters’ Kenloyd Roberts split two defenders for a lay-up Saturday night on the Burnham Basketball Court.
Guard, Hodyah Stewart’s three-second heroics piloted Nets to a 75-74 upset win over Pacesetters when the Phillip George Legacy Tournament III continued at the outdoor venue. Stewart finished a put-back from Antwaun Austin’s missed ‘freebee’ to secure the win.
Nets had defeated Ravens, another top-ranked Georgetown club, Thursday night. Their win over Pacesetters was their second major triumph in three days, placing them on top of their group and a sure candidate for the semis.
With point guard, Travis Burnette, forwards Royston Siland and Joslyn Crawford all fouled out for Pacesetters, and only three seconds remaining, the inbounded pass to Ruel Ritch proved futile when he stepped out of bounds to give Nets the win.
Forward Mortimer Williams scored 22 points with Drunson McCulley adding 13 points. Stewart and Austin supported with nine and seven points respectively. For Pacesetters, which had beaten Berbice’s Rockers last weekend, Randy Richardson had 18 points, while Burnette scored 14 with Stephon Gillis and Crawford adding 13 and 10 points.
Pacesetters controlled the first half of the game after leading 22-17 at the end of the first quarter, taking that advantage to 12 points, 41-29, compliments of sublime sharp shooting from Gillis and Crawford on the boards.
A slumbering Pacesetters unit, allowed Nets to slowly crawl back into the game, out-hustling them in the third quarter. Williams came alive in the penultimate period to lead his side that went to the last period down 47-56. The comeback for Nets was official as they out-manoeuvred Pacesetters that struggled to complete offensive plays.
Williams and Pelham Doris combined with McCulley and Stewart to transform what seemed an easy win for Pacesetters into defeat. It was clear that Nets have figured out, as they did against Ravens, that every time they go big they are a certain threat.
In the preceding games, Colts blew-out Knights 82-58 with Dave Causway scoring 24 points in the win, while Rayon Cummings and Nikkoloi Smith added 21 points each. For Knights, which was handed their second loss, Lloyd Bart had 15 points, while Owan Walton scored 14 points.
In the second matchup of the night, Georgetown Masters rolled back several years, overcoming Berbice Rockers 75-71 with Lugard Mohan scoring 29 points, while Aubrey Young and Kenrick Thomas supported with 18 and 10 points respectively.
Jason Fraser, Jamal Felix and Michael Bowen had 19, 13 and 12 points respectively in the loss for Rockers, which was their second of the competition.
The night opened with Pepsi Sonics crushing Melanie Patriots 81-61 with Trevor Smith leading Sonics with 24 points. Nevon Vyphuis and Junior Lovell had 12 and 10 points respectively in the win. Sherlon Legall and Ashton Adams had 14 points for Patriots.
