– dad claims he was crossing road with child after buying ice cream

A six-year-old boy was killed at around 12.00 hrs yesterday after being struck by a car at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, but police and the victim’s father have given conflicting versions of how the tragedy occurred.
According to a police release, the child, Shaheed Yusuff, of Farm, East Bank Essequibo, was struck by a car when he ran from a yard at Parika onto the main road. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
But in a telephone interview with Kaieteur News, the father, Mohamed Yusuf, said that he had taken his son out on the roadway to by ice-cream.
After making the purchase, Mr. Yusuf alleged that he was holding the child’s hand and heading back across the road when a speeding car struck the six-year-old “out of my hand.”
“We were crossing the road together; we had done buy the ice-cream, and he (the driver) knock the child out of my hand,” Mr. Yusuf said. “He almost knock both of we.”
Kaieteur News was told that the driver stopped some distance away, while Mr. Yusuf took his son to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.
The driver, who is reportedly from Leonora, West Coast Demerara, has been detained.
