Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies Test Captain Denish Ramdin reportedly said in an interview on SportMax Television
last Wednesday that Guyanese Leon Johnson had texted him to tell him that he felt victimised since he returned to Guyana from India.
The 27-year-old left-hander who made his debut in St Lucia in the historic 500th Test match played by the West Indies, told Kaieteur Sport that he has never felt victimised in any way since his return from India and confirmed sending a letter to the President of the Guyana Cricket Board to set the records straight.
“I want to make it clear that I never felt victimised at any time and I have played in the last practice match and as far as I know I am fully eligible to play for Guyana in the WICB Franchise tournament which starts here (Providence) next Friday.”
Johnson, Guyana’s Captain for the last Regional Four-day session earlier this year when he was the only Guyanese to score a century, missed the first practice match due to a finger injury. He was a part of the squad which aborted their tour to India after the fourth ODI.
“I was told that Ramdin said on SportsMax Zone that I texted him telling him I felt victimised because of what happened in India. I contacted Ramdin to clarify what was said since I did not see the programme.”
According to Johnson, his West Indies Captain explained that he had an interview on SportsMax and they (hosts) were asking for players who he thought could have been victimized around the Caribbean.
“Ramdin said he called my name and said he thinks Leon Johnson may have been one of the guys as well that Guyana might be looking to because he played with us in India, as well as on other teams around the Caribbean,” Johnson informed.
The stylish left-hander stressed he wanted to focus on his cricket and did not want to get involved in back and forth confrontations with anyone.
Johnson missed a debut Test century by 34 runs because he took too long (15 seconds) to call for the review which showed that he would have been not out.
“It is important that the executives of the Guyana Cricket Board know that since my return from India I have in no way felt victimized by any member of the board. I fell right back into my usual role on the team. I was selected to captain a playing 11 in both practice games since I’ve returned. I am proud to represent my country and remain fully committed to the Guyana Jaguars, in whatever capacity,” Johnson said in a letter to the GCB President which was seen by Kaieteur Sport.
Johnson who has scored two tons and 20 fifties from 51 First-Class games since making his debut at this level in 2004 for Guyana against the Leewards at Enmore, concluded that he was hoping to have a good remainder of the year with the bat and retain his place in the West Indies team to tour South Africa at the end of the year.
