Dear Editor
I am compelled to write this letter after learning of the robbery at the St Philip’s Church on Sunday and following the emergence of a recorded conversation between the Attorney General and a news reporter. This robbery is a startling reminder that all is not well in our nation. We can no longer feel that once we are law abiding citizens we are safe, at least within the confines of our own homes and our places of worship.
I strongly believe that it was no accident that this robbery was committed in a Church at a time when government is under mounting pressure to fire the Attorney General for utterances made during the said telephone conversation. These two unfortunate incidents have shown clearly that there is a massive breakdown of law and order in our society. The statements made by government thus far following the circulation of this recorded conversation, including one by the President, have effectively endorsed the conduct of the Attorney General but on the other hand call for an investigation into the recording of the said conversation.
These developments have brought to the forefront the lawlessness that pervades our society from the levels of Government to the ordinary man in the streets. The very foundation of a state is shaken when lawlessness is exposed in the lives of top Government officials.
However, these two incidents reveal much more than one can see with the natural eye. The robbery in the Church at this time is significant, it is an indication of how low we have sunk as a people and unless the conduct exhibited by the Attorney General is condemned by this Government in no uncertain terms we can expect crimes of a similar nature as robbery, even in a place of worship. This is the nature of criminal activity we can expect if the Minister of Legal Affairs will endorse violence as retaliation for unfavorable media coverage and still remains in office. This is a sad day for this country. It is important for us to remember that this gentleman advises the President on legal matters. Please allow this to register in your mind.
