Businessman Derrick Jaisingh appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown
Magistrates’ Court to answer to an attempted murder charge.
It is alleged that on Sunday, last, the virtual complainants, Sherwin Hamilton and Vilton Edwards, were at Old Road, Land of Canaan, when they received information that one of their relatives was being assaulted on the Land of Canaan Public Road. When they arrived, the two men and the accused got into a confrontation. As a result, it is alleged that the accused, who is a licenced firearm holder, took out his weapon and discharged 13 rounds in the victims’ direction, causing them severe bodily harm.
The victims were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where they are presently admitted and their conditions are stable.
Jaisingh, 33, is married and a father of three. He resides at 8-9 Land of Canaan.
The accused was not required to plead. His lawyer, Ganesh Hira, said that the accused was acting in self-defence when the incident occurred.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence, and the fact that extreme violence and a firearm were used.
However, Chief Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted the accused $400,000 on each of the two counts.
