A police woman is now in hot water after she was charged with embezzlement by a public officer. Police Corporal Vanessa Byass, 41, of Paradise, West Coast Berbice, who was stationed at the Fort Wellington Police Station, West Coast Berbice, is accused of embezzling $37, 500.
The act was alleged to have been committed between Sunday January 12 and Tuesday January 14, 2014.
According to the prosecution, Byass was the duty officer at the station. During the time a number of animals were taken into the pound where the necessary documents were written up.
The owner subsequently arrived and monies were paid for the release of the animals. When the books were checked the money could not tally. Enquires were made and the Corporal could not give an account for the missing $37,500.
An investigation was launched and a file was prepared and sent to the DPP for advice.
Byass was subsequently charged and placed before the court.
She appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Weldaad Magistrate’s court and was granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
