Benjamin’s Homemade Bakery in Buxton, East Coast Demerara, yesterday rewarded
nine students for their success at the 2014 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) with bursary awards at a ceremony held at the bakery. The awards have been ongoing for the past eight years.
The awardees were selected from East Coast Demerara schools from which their performance earned them places at Queen’s College, Bishops’ High School, St Joseph’s High, St. Stanislaus College and President’s College.
Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, who was in attendance at the awards ceremony, acknowledged the hard work of the students and said government believes that there is no greater investment to be made than those made for the benefit of children’s education. Commending the owner of the bakery Adrian Benjamin, the Minister noted that the occasion has tremendous significance from a number of perspectives, among which is corporate social responsibility.
“Mr. Benjamin has exemplified this principle, the principle of giving back to his community, more than most small and medium size businesses have. He has over the years been awarding and encouraging young people in his area, and for this we salute and commend him. This gathering has provided us with an opportunity to showcase the fine and distinguished village Buxton is.”
Referring to the gathering which included Buxton’s senior citizens, he noted that they have served both country and community thus earning respect, salutations, commendations and gratitude.
“This ceremony has always excited me because I believe that Mr. Benjamin has blazed the trail as a small business owner, growing his business, but displaying what businesses ought to be doing throughout the length and breadth of our country, giving back to their communities, encouraging the young people to achieve, to work hard, rewarding strong performance and inspiring others to emulate these performances,” Minister Singh stated.
To the students, the Finance Minister urged, “To those who are not being awarded today, all is not lost, not everyone will do well at the first jump. You might not be awarded today, but when we come back to award CXC performers, I hope to see some of you young people among the awardees. To those of you who have been awarded, I wish you well, and I say to you that our Government believes there is no more important investment than investing in education. I pledge to you that our Government will continue to invest the lion’s share of our budget to education and in our young people.”
Observing that over 15% of the National Budget is invested in education, he indicated that this ensures that students have the most modern facilities “…along with the national programmes…such as the national school uniform, education grants and school feeding are implemented.”
He called on the parents of Buxton to continue to support their children, since “without you, no matter what the Government does, the teachers and headmistresses, without the parents and other family members encouraging the children, ensuring that they do their homework, they attend school, that they are attentive, that they revise for exams, unless family members and village elders do their part, we will not realise the potential of these young people.”The students who received awards were:
