“Today marks another groundbreaking day in the Petra Organisation and as we’ve said in the past, our aim is to help in the development of football in Guyana,” were the opening remarks of Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca, during the Launch of the Ministry of Health / Health 2000 (Guyana) Inc. / Ministry of Education / Ansa McAl under the Smalta brand 11 and under Girls Schools Football Tournament, at the Girls Guides Pavilion on Brickdam yesterday.
Mendonca, along with representatives of the sponsors’ addressed the media to signal the Launch of the inaugural event told the gathering that many questions were asked after the entity had staged mainly competitions for boys and pointed to yesterday’s occasion as irrefutable evidence of their commitment to the development of the sport.
“We’re all about youth development and this follows the successes we’ve had with the Courts Pee Wee Under-11 and the Milo Under-20 competitions,” Mendonca remarked.
According to him, a dozen schools have been invited and they will be placed in three groups of four to play a round-robin format with the top two from each automatically moving on to the knockout phase, while the top two third place finishers will join them in the quarter finals.
The tournament will kick off on November 14 and run until December 13 with all matches slated for the Girls Guide ground, Brickdam and the Organisers are anticipating it to be a huge success.
Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam in his remarks first congratulated the Organisation for once again demonstrating that it is serious about the development of football and youths.
He disclosed that the event was conceptualized at the end of the last term, but for various reasons did not materialize until now and he is extremely excited about it both himself and his Ministry.
“What was missing was a tournament like this one which starts at the fundamental level and what we noticed was that none of the other organisations involved in the sport were coming forward with a venture such as this one and on behalf of the Ministry I would like to extend congratulations to the Petra Organisation,” Sam noted.
Public Relations Officer of Ansa McAl Trading, Darshanie Yussuf, said her company is “excited” be on board, noting that the investment in female football is a welcomed one.
Ansa McAl Trading is sponsoring the competition under its Smalta brand, and according to Yussuf said she is looking forward to a “competitive” tournament.
Administrative Assistant of Health 2000 (Guyana) Inc., Shunet Lewis Crandon in her presentation shortly after giving a brief outline of the entity’s function expressed excitement about the timing of the tournament, adding that they will use the opportunity to expand partnerships in Health care.
Dr. Janice Woolford, who also represented the Ministry of Health, first congratulated the Petra Organisation for showing the intuition to stage such a tournament, before telling those present of the Ministry’s plan to hold parenting sessions on playing days.
She said that while the competition will begin with twelve schools it is hoped that it could expand to the stage where it accommodates an even higher number in the near future. Dr. Woolford, the Maternal and Child Health Officer of the Health Ministry uttered how happy her organisation is to hear of the involvement of girls in a football competition.
The schools invited to participate are: St Margaret’s, West Ruimveldt, Tucville, North Georgetown, South Ruimveldt, St Pius, Marian Academy, F.E. Pollard, Enterprise, East La Penitence, St Stephen’s and Stella Maris. Smith’s Memorial is on standby.
