Nursing gunshot wounds in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) are 50-year-old Welton Edwards, and his nephew, 40-year-old Sherwin Hamilton, both of Land Of Canaan, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The two men were allegedly shot by a lone gunman, who was purportedly under the influence of alcohol. The incident happened in the neighbouring village of Sarah Johanna on the public road, shortly after midnight Sunday.
Sharon Edwards, the wife of one of the victims, said that the men were involved in a scuffle when shots were fired. The shooter, she claimed, is named ‘Derrick’, and has been involved in similar cases in the past.
According to Edwards, she was about to sleep when she received a phone call from her sister-in-law telling her that there was shooting in the area.
“When I was going to the gate, a girl come to me saying ‘Aunty Sharon! Uncle Welton get shoot’.” She added that while she was rushing to the scene of the shooting, she saw that Hamilton was lying face down on the road, bleeding.
This newspaper understands that the incident occurred when Edwards and his nephew tried to restrain another relative from fighting with the shooter. The relative in question, Raymond Hamilton, was also allegedly intoxicated.
“From what I understand the whole story start, when my husband other nephew, Raymond, been out drinking with some friends and then start arguing with de shooter.”
“After that it turn into a fight, and me husband and Raymond brother went to break up de fight.”
When the two men tried to stop the conflict, Derrick reportedly fired several shots at them. The shooter then made his way to the nearby police station where he accused the men of trying to rob him.
However, Derrick, a licensed firearm holder, reportedly has a history in the village of starting “trouble” with his gun while under the influence of alcohol. Sharon Edwards said that the shooter has fired his gun many times while he was drunk.
The victim’s wife said that her husband received two shots to his back and abdomen, while Raymond received gunshot wounds to his abdomen and foot. Late yesterday, Hamilton was undergoing surgery to remove a bullet that was lodged in the lower part of his abdomen.
Meanwhile, Edwards dislocated his shoulder and was treated for it. He too was awaiting treatment for his bullet wounds.
The shooter is reportedly in police custody assisting with investigations.
