A robber who pounced on a man and wrestled with him for an artificial chain was jailed for 56 months.
Anthony Williams was convicted and sentenced on a robbery with violence charge by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
On the assumption that the jewellery which Charles Allen had been wearing on August 26 at Cornhill Street, Stabroek, Georgetown was genuine gold, 22-year-old Williams robbed the man of his belongings.
According to the prosecution, Allen, dressed in artificial gold jewellery, had stopped on Cornhill Street to purchase food when the accused came up from behind him, choked him and placed a knife to his neck demanding he hand over his jewellery which was valued at $1500.
The incident got the attention of police ranks that were in the area. The 22-year-old was taken into custody and later charged.
During his first arraignment in August before the said Magistrate, Williams pleaded not guilty to the charge and told the court that the entire incident was a joke. He went on to say that he and Allen are acquaintances, and that they operated a minibus together. He would usually buy items for him, the defendant said.
A trial was subsequently conducted. The case was prosecuted by Inspector Joel Ricknauth and Williams was unrepresented by legal Counsel.
