Don’t let 180 feet of sloppy work spoil this admirable effort

DEAR EDITOR,
It is disgusting to see competent workers do sloppy work. The trench along Hunter Street to Mandela Avenue is being dug. The operator of the excavator started at the middle of the trench and did a very good job of scooping the overburden (grass) and digging the trench and making the edges neat. A work to be admired.
However for 180 feet, starting from the Mandela end of the trench (which was fully overgrown with grass), the operator just scooped the overburden with little digging. So this end of the trench is shallower. Now the water has drained to the deep part of the trench that was dug and the silted part is showing. If this part is not dug deeper, the grass will quickly grow back and the community will not benefit fully from the intended flood relief. We suffer a lot from floods.
What is worse is that the water from the community of West Ruimveldt is drained through a culvert at this Mandela end of the trench. The uprights at both ends of the culvert broke off completely blocking the flow of water from the gutters reaching the trench, thus defeating the purpose of digging the trench. This impediment has to be removed for the dug trench to provide the intended flood relief to the community.
For there to be value for money, accountability and intended benefits to the community, there should be a re-run of the job at this part of the trench and the collapsed culverts need to be removed so the water flow is not impeded. It is indeed commendable for the works being done to restore a clean and healthy environment. I feel there should be appropriation of funds annually for maintenance and sustainability of our environment.
I am hoping that the relevant persons would act positively to the information in this letter.
