– Residents pleased with quality of works
As the rainy season approaches, Community Enhancement Workers are collaborating with several Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Four to improve internal drainage networks.
Removal of thick weed and garbage from clogged primary and secondary drains is being facilitated by the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP).
A total of 79 Community Enhancement Workers assisted Cane Grove, Unity/ Vereeniging, Grove/ Haslington and Enmore/Hope NDCs to clean community drains, burial grounds and playgrounds, much to the satisfaction of residents.
During a recent inspection of works done in the Region, Herman Persaud, Region Four Community Enhancement Officer, related that all primary and secondary drains in Helena No.2 South and North were cleared of obstacles.
His satisfaction regarding the quality of works done by the team was echoed by residents, who are pleased that their surroundings have been transformed from that of overgrown vegetation covering the drains to serene flowing water.
Providing an insight as to what the drains looked like before the massive clearing, one resident Deoki Bachan said that thick vegetation covered the water, making the environment look neglected and dreary.
She is one of the many residents who expressed thanks to the Ministry of Housing and Water for assisting the NDC in improving the appearance of the community.
An enthusiastic resident Lennox Gonsalves said, “This is the first time in years our drains this clean…it gives a sense of homeliness…Now we can say we have a residential area…you don’t have to live in Prashad Nagar to have a clean community.”
According to Persaud, works are ongoing in Good Hope. The community’s playground was also cleared of bushes making the compound safe for children.
He noted that interlocking drains in Helena No.1 have been cleared of bushes and garbage benefiting over 5,000 households. This was done following the clearing of overgrown vegetation from the community’s cemetery. The cemetery was overgrown with thick vegetation and littered with garbage that had accumulated over decades, he said.
Community Enhancement Workers are currently cleaning residential drains in Cane Grove. The drains were not cleaned since last year and residents are grateful, particularly with the upcoming rainy season.
Hardai Bisnath, a widow and resident of Cane Grove, is thankful that the drains are being cleaned since she was faced with the financial burden of paying someone to clean the drains bordering her property.
She is cognizant that the NDC is faced with financial burdens and hopes this assistance provided by Government would encourage residents to pay their rates and taxes.
“If you getting good service provided like how these men cleaning the drains and the parapets surely people should have conscience and pay their rates and taxes,” Bisnath said.
Meanwhile, Persaud said cleaning of community drains in Ann’s Grove was completed and similar exercises have commenced in Bee Hive and Clonbrook. Community Enhancement Workers are also cleaning drains in other communities under Enmore/ Hope and Buxton/ Foulis NDCs.
