Dear Editor,
It seems like aeons ago since the last Caribbean Festival of Creative Art was held here in Guyana, but actually it was only 2008 and that the Guyanese nation enjoyed this special event which by all intents and purpose, before this appeared to be dead, hats off to the Guyana authorities for pulling off such a great celebration after such a lengthy pause (1972).
While some enjoyed to the fullest Carifesta 2008 the event have left a bitter taste to many in the business sector and from my information business individuals who have expended tons of capital investment for the supply of various commodities is owed I am informed to the tune of $6 million Guyana dollars, and one business man took a loan that had to be repaid to the bank so that he could be part of a successful event while getting an opportunity to earn some honest cash.
It would appear from my enquiries that some corrupt forces who sought to benefit from the proverbial under the” table method” took advantage of the trust and confidence placed in them by the government indirectly and by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (directly) to exploit honest and hardworking entrepreneurs, there was so much looseness in the system that it gave no protection to unerring and unsuspecting investors whose only desire was to earn a dollar through hard work.
I do understand the difficulty of the authorities to micro manage personal on the ground so there had to be trust on a large scale volume, every society has it’s vultures who prey on the vulnerable and this in some cases is a daily occurrence around Guyana and the world.
My ache and gripe though is the way these honest business personnel are being treated, they have been painted with the brush of corruption, I know there are those who are wolves in sheep’s clothing but the onus is always on the agency to pry and probe so as to ensure that those who are not culpable do not suffer the same fate as the dishonest ones.
I would like to be the voice crying out from the wilderness that action be taken to rectify and give redress to innocent persons in the above mentioned sector, that and inquiry be done with immunity given from prosecution so as the ascertain whether the goods ordered was actually supplied, and where it was delivered to, the innocent must not be made to suffer as the guilty, the government must not take the stance of “Peter Pay for Paul and Paul pay for all attitude, that won’t be justice and fairness.
I appeal to His Excellency the President Mr Donald Romotar and the Hon Minister Frank Anthony to put this matter at the top of the list of this to enquire into and come up with what is to be paid out to only the deserving business personnel.
