On a deteriorating Bourda pitch that made batting hard work, Skipper Vishaul Singh led from
the front yesterday with an accomplished 109 to spearhead his team to an exciting two-wicket win against Leon Johnson’s X1 on the final day of their first four-day practice match despite a 6-wicket haul from 25 year-old left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul.
Set 334 to win, Singh’s X1 scored 307 runs on the final day to reach 336-8 with 1.1 overs left to be bowled in a thrilling finish as the diminutive 25-year-old Singh, who faced 246 balls and reached the boundary 11times, shared in a 157-run sixth wicket stand with Steven Jacobs who hammered nine fours from 121 balls in a delightful 68. Permaul captured 6-126 in a losing cause.
Scores: Johnson’s X1 (240 & 287-8 dec), Singh’s X1 (194 & 336-8).
Resuming the fourth day on 29-0, Singh’s X1 lost Taignarine Chanderpaul (13), bowled by Permaul with the score on 38 before Surujnarine Kandasammy and Shemron Hetmyer carried their team to 62 with attractive batting in sultry conditions.
Kandasammy, who began the day on 14, stroked four fours from 63 balls before he was run out while Hetmyer took on the bowlers in an explosive 50 (6×4) from just 54 balls. With the partnership on 53 and the pair seemingly set to build on that foundation after Lunch, Hetmyer was removed at 115-3 two balls before the interval as Permaul got the break-through in a session that produced 86 runs and three wickets.
After Lunch, Royston Crandon (3) was run out at 119-4 while Ricardo Adams (6) gloved the ball trying to sweep at Permaul – 129-5 – to put the brakes on the run-chase. Jacobs settled down after a shaky start and along with the resolute Singh, who has played 13 First-Class matches since his debut against Barbados in 2009, carried the score to 179-5 by Tea. Singh leaned into Permaul and rushed into the 30s with a thumping four down the ground and a six which rebounded from the Rohan Kanhai stand.
Jacobs’ confidence grew as his innings progressed and a magnificent straight drive which raced past Chris Barnwell’s ankles like a scud missile was out of the top drawer. After Tea, Jacobs and Singh extended their partnership and ‘upped the tempo’ in the final session, and clearly the run-chase was on.
When Jacobs was removed by the nagging Permaul at 286-6 and teenager Kemo Paul (13) edged Permaul to wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble at 308-7, either side had a realistic chance of victory.
However, the responsible Singh took his team to within five runs of victory before he fell to the impressive Permaul. With eight wickets down Johnson’s X1 were in with a ‘sniff’ of a chance of registering a sensational win.
But that was not to be as Jason Sinclair unbeaten on 13 and Amir Khan (2) ensured their team emerged winners.
The final four-day match before the squad is selected for inaugural the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League Regional Four-Day Franchise Tournament which starts on November 14 is scheduled for Providence from next Tuesday to Friday.
