The Government will remain “silent” on the issue regarding the Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall following the release
of a recorded conversation between the Minister and a reporter from Kaieteur News.
This “new” announcement comes after the government had initially issued a lengthy statement supporting Nandlall.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon told the media yesterday that the administration will not say anything more on the matter.
Luncheon explained that since the matter is now engaging the attention of the Court, the government could not comment since it would be ‘sub judice’.
The Cabinet Secretary was responding to questions about whether the government will give in to several calls by the Alliance for Change and A Partnership for National Unity, for Nandall to step down as the country’s Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister.
The information of legal action being filed has arisen and the matter being sub judice,” Dr Luncheon said.
On Tuesday the embattled Attorney General filed a $30M lawsuit against this publication Kaieteur News for libel contained in an article published on October 28, titled “Attorney General reveals plan to hit Glenn Lall, Kaieteur News”.
Glenn Lall, the Publisher and owner of Kaieteur News on Monday last handed over to the police, a recording of a conversation between the AG and Leonard Gildharie, a senior reporter. In a profanity laced recording a voice believed to be that of the Attorney General could be heard talking about a potentially violent threat against Lall and his staff.
“I told Adam [Adam Harris, Editor, Kaieteur News] everybody don’t have a newspaper to use as a weapon. I told Adam people got weapons. If they continue to attack people like this and they [people] have no way of responding, they will just walk with their weapon into that same f**king Saffon Street office and wah come shall do.”
Nandlall has since admitted to the conversation.
On Tuesday the Alliance For Change in a statement said that the party is “shocked beyond disbelief” at the recent revelations in a conversation between a Kaieteur News reporter and Nandlall.
The party said that the transcript of the conversation “which the AG has most recently admitted as having said highlights that he has proven himself wholly unfit to hold the office of Attorney General of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana”.
The AFC said that President Donald Ramotar must demand the immediate resignation of Nandlall, as his failure to act swiftly on this issue would be an endorsement of such behaviour by persons who represent our country at the highest level in Guyana and internationally.
