A Guyanese mother is arrested and currently in police custody in the Cayman Islands, after her daughter
was found dead, reportedly with as many as 71 stab wounds about her body.
Dead is six-year-old Bethany Butler whose body was discovered on Monday last in a car parked off Queen’s Highway in East End. Her 37-year-old mother, Tamara Butler, was arrested nearby on suspicion of murdering her daughter. .
Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Kay sent condolences to the family in a statement, which read:
“This is a tragic incident and our condolences go out to the family members of this young child and in particular her father, a policeman, Linford Butler. We are in the very early stages of this murder investigation and as such we are putting together all the pieces in order to find out exactly what happened leading up to this untimely death. We would be very interested in speaking to anyone who may have been on the Queens Highway in the early hours of Monday morning and who may have seen a light colored SUV parked anywhere along the roadside.”
Savannah Primary, where Bethany was a Year 2 student, was quiet Tuesday morning as classes weren’t in session due to midterm break.
The Department of Education told Cayman 27 that when students return from break, counselling will be available for staff, students and for parents of students, giving them assistance as to how to answer difficult questions about Bethany’s death.
Police are interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen a light-colored SUV parked along Queen’s Highway early Monday morning.
Butler, the daughter of educator Claudette Clare, reportedly stabbed her child and then apparently tried to commit suicide.
Adrian Seales, Superintendent of Police in the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, confirmed the child’s death and the arrest of the woman.
According to Seales at approximately 4:59am Monday 27th October 2014, a police patrol came across a parked SUV on the road side along an area in Cayman Islands called Queens’ Highway. Upon further investigation the Police Officers discovered the body of a six-year-old girl inside the vehicle, he said.
He added: “A subsequent search of the area utilizing the RCIPS helicopter and other ground units found a 37-year-old female resident not far from the parked vehicle. She was subsequently connected to the vehicle and was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody while the investigation continues.
The RCIPS have commenced a murder inquiry and a major incident room has been opened at the George Town Police Station.”
