Yesterday provided good news for the children of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation
Centre (PRRC). The renovations on facilities were completed. The revitalization project, which was sponsored by Digicel, was aimed at creating a safe and healthy environment for children with special needs.
The project began last December 13, when Digicel and the PRRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for major rehabilitation works to be undertaken at the complex. This collaboration flourished as a result of a request made by the Centre, which Digicel deemed as an “investment in Guyana’s future”.
Digicel reportedly spent approximately $12 million on the project. The works included the repainting of the building, refurbishing of its access ramps, flooring of the physiotherapy room and repairing of the roof, windows and other parts of the building. The company also did work to improve the children’s centre.
At an official thanksgiving ceremony yesterday, Digicel’s Head of Marketing, Jacqueline James, said that the company is delighted and humbled to be involved in the project.
She continued to say that this year marks three years of providing help to persons with disabilities. According to James, Digicel has participated in many projects across Guyana that help to develop the livelihood of people with mental and physical handicaps.
This includes a programme in Region Ten, which is aimed at providing state of the art facilities to children with special needs in Linden.
Speaking to attendees, Patrick James Mara, a representative from Digicel’s Board of Directors reaffirmed the company’s commitment to improving facilities for those with disabilities. He said “(the company) will continue its work in the area of special needs and we will fully support any future projects that are directed there.”
Meanwhile, children of the PRRC took the time to personally thank Digicel for their supporting. The special needs students expressed their gratitude through song and music.
This project is the second collaborative effort between Digicel and the PRRC. Previously, the company also sponsored the refurbishment of the dining area and washroom facilities of the centre.
Overall, 64 children attend the PRRC’s nursery, primary and vocational education departments, with 30 others in day care. The facility also has experts who provide rehabilitation services to children and adults alike.
