Shiv Chanderpaul and Rajendra Chandrika registered half centuries to leave the practice
Shiv Chanderpaul pulls Kemo Paul brutally to the boundary during his half-century at Bourda yesterday.
game between Leon Johnson’s X1 and Vishaul Singh’ X1 wide open yesterday at the end of day three of the first four-day match at Bourda to select the Guyana Jaguars team for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League Regional Four-Day Franchise Tournament which starts on November 14.
When stumps were drawn Vishaul Singh’s X1, set 334 to win in an hour and the entire last day today, were 26 without loss with Kandasammy Surujnarine (14) and Taignarine Chanderpaul (13). Singh’s X1 need 308 with all 10 wickets in hand. Scores: Johnson’s X1 (240 & 287-8 dec) Singh’s X1 (194 & 26-0).
Resuming on 73-2, Johnson’s X1 overnight pair of Chandrika and Narsingh Deonarine took the score to 85 on a flat track that was already breaking up before Chandrika then pushed forward to off-spinner Steven Jacobs and was taken at forward short-leg for 55 from 90 balls.
Deonarine and Chanderpaul Hemraj joined forces to add 40 for the fourth wicket in sunny conditions before a handful of spectators watched as the left-handed Deonarine failed to get to the pitch of a ball from leg-spinner Amir Khan and skied a catch to cover to leave the score on 124-4.
Deonarine’s 36 lasted 93 balls and included three fours, his demise came just when he was looking set for a big score. Royston Crandon struck with the last ball before Lunch when Hemraj got himself out with a brainless shot after doing all the hard work to get to 26 to leave the score on 137-5 at the
interval.
If there was a rule to share the wicket with the catcher, then pacer Raun Johnson, standing six feet, seven inches would have certainly shared Crandon’s wicket after running back from mid-off and diving full length to pull of one of the most breathtaking catches in local cricket in recent times.
Veteran Chanderpaul, who came out with a positive mindset, joined Chris Barnwell and with aggressive running between the wickets took the score to 180 with entertaining batting from both batsmen before Barnwell was run out for 19 in a mix-up with Chanderpaul.
The left-handed Test player with the second most runs among West Indians made a consorted effort to score quickly and used his feet to dance into Jacobs and effortlessly dump him on top of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) office and onto Regent Street.
The 40-year-old Chanderpaul then swept left-arm spinner Anthony Adams over the backward square-leg boundary to reach his fifty from 70 balls with five fours and two sixes and celebrated the landmark next ball with an even bigger six that cleared the ground with ease.
Chanderpaul and Jonathon Foo took their side to 238-6 by Tea as Johnson’s X1 enjoyed a good second session scoring 101 runs, losing just one wicket. Two runs after Tea, Foo (19) was taken at slip as Khan got one to turn viciously while Anthony Bramble and Chanderpaul, who was miss-stumped off Khan on 61, added 47 for the eighth wicket before Chanderpaul was LBW to Adams.
Chanderpaul’s 64 came from 121 balls and was decorated with five fours and three sixes, his departure triggered the declaration leaving Singh’s X1 to negotiate 10 overs before the close. Jacobs finished with 3-56 while Khan who bowled beautifully yesterday, teasing the batsmen with clever flight supported with 2-62. Today is the final day and played is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
