With Lusignan Golf Club Captain Chatterpaul Deo reporting that the greens and
fairways are in excellent shape, fans planning on attending this weekend’s Digicel 2014 Guyana Open Golf Tournament should expect a keenly contested competition over the two days.
Locally-based players have enjoyed good success over the past few years, but according to Canada-based Roger Rajkumar, the improvements made to the Course and the excellent conditions have made the playing field level for all, thereby giving the visiting players just as good a chance as the locals.
The change in format which Deo announced has been altered from last year when the overall winner came from the 0-9 Flight, could see a winner emerge from the 0-9, 10-18 or 19-28 Flights.
Defending men’s champion Arvinda Kishore, who dethroned his brother Avinash Persaud will be aiming to reproduce the form that gave him the title last year, but there are a number of other players who will think that should they play consistent they too have a chance of winning the most prestigious local tournament.
The brothers have a distinct advantage over the others, having literally grown up on the Course and knowing it first hand and while they may be heavily favoured to win, players such as Alfred Mentore, Patrick Persaud, Mohanlall Dinanauth, Munaff Arjune Rajkumar, Vijay Deo and Roy Cummings can also challenge for the top spot.
The phenomenal Christine Sukhram will look to defend her title from last year against perennial rival Joann Deo and Shaunella Webster, as well as a few foreign participants. According to the Organisers, players are expected from Canada, USA, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.
The golfers compete in four categories- (0-9 handicap), B Flight (10-18), C Flight (19-28) and Ladies Flight. Tee off time is 07:00hrs and Digicel CEO Gregory Dean is expected to open the tournament.
