Dear Sir
Minister Robert Persaud, when he was Minister of Agriculture, was featured in a national newspaper as saying that he went to Suriname to negotiate with his Dutch counterpart to re-open the illegal backtrack.
It has been an ongoing thing for people to be picked up in Suriname and sent back to Guyana and charged for leaving Guyana illegally. Most have been fined and until recently a few were sent to prison. These persons, like myself, were led to believe that the backtrack was ok. Then they go to jail for using it.
An employee of GUYSUCO, from Skeldon estate was fired for hitting a manager, which action resulted from an altercation between the two and with some undue influence on the part of the manager. Why was such a situation allowed to happen? Now is it ok for the manager or any supervisor to mouth off and call persons in their employ names and get away with it because the junior must be respectful? That Manager ought to have conducted himself better.
Then the most recent abuse by a Chief Executive Officer came from our very own Member of Parliament, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, at the Port Mourant Hospital when he scolded a pregnant nurse ,who could not (because of her ill health) go on an ambulance ride to Skeldon Hospital.
This nurse was about four months’ pregnant and was deemed medically unfit to work that day so she went home after Dr Khirodar assigned her to make the trip. Lo and behold the nurse was faced with disciplinary action by this very authoritative Dr. Khirodar and intense abuse by the MP Dr Mahadeo, CEO of the Berbice Regional Health Authority.
Then there is a matter in the court at Whim where a supervisor was involved in an altercation with a cane cutter and he, the supervisor attacked the cane cutter in the field. Now this poor cane cutter is suspended from his job and the supervisor is still working.
I will end by relating my own experience with Minister Jennifer Westford. She held my transport for over one year after I had pledged it as surety for my daughter to leave the country for three weeks to go to Canada.
My daughter studied medicine in Cuba on a Scholarship and so she was bonded to serve the country for five years. My transport was ledged to ensure she returned to Guyana. She returned on April 8, 2013 and Minister Westford refused to return my transport, saying that my daughter had to submit her passport to have it stamped.
Now getting a stamp in her passport was not my concern but it was the Minister’s because they neglected to have all passports stamped and some persons got away and without paying back the money spent on their studies. In short it is an administrative screw-up and Westford was trying damage control by holding on to my transport. Now I made several attempts to get my transport back and all failed.
My daughter’s contractual obligation to this Government ended on September 6, 2014 and so I was given my transport. After Minister Westford refused to give me my transport I went to the court and reported it ‘misplaced’. I then made an application for what is describes as “loss grosse” and in three days I had a new transport which I used to sell my property.
