I am fearful for the life of Glenn Lall. I know that he is more concerned about the safety of his family and that of his staff than he is about his own life and limb. He has always placed the concerns of others above those of himself. This is why he has been relentless in exposing the rampant corruption and other reprobate actions of the PPP government.
Today he faces a most difficult choice. He has to now be more concerned about the safety of his family and that of the dozens of persons who work for him. He has to determine how to protect all of these persons against a regime that clearly knows no limits.
What is he going to do? It is not easy protecting people against the power of the State. How do you protect people from the State when there are inadequate safeguards to do so? It is like a mission impossible.
The only defence against State tyranny lies in the people. It is the people of Guyana who have to defend Glenn Lall and Kaieteur News. If the people of Guyana do not come to the defence of Kaieteur News, then Glenn Lall will be faced with only one choice, and that is close the newspaper down.
In fact, I am sure that there are persons who are already advising him to do so, because it seems as if unless he does this, the danger to his family and staff will remain.
It is time for a Committee in Defence of Kaieteur News to be formed immediately. Unless this is done, the sort of support that is needed to help those bent on harming Lall, his family and his staff will not be forthcoming.
Things have gotten out of hand. We have moved beyond the conspiracy to muzzle and jail Glenn Lall. There is now a far more ominous threat.
The people of Guyana must now come to the rescue of Kaieteur News. A Committee in Defence of Kaieteur News, drawn from a wide cross section of Guyanese, must be immediately formed. International support must be mobilized. Guyanese in the Diaspora must be asked to add their voices to the condemnation of the attacks and plots against this newspaper. There is need to defend Kaieteur News against its enemies. But more importantly, the readers of this newspaper must form a human shield to protect the staff of Kaieteur News from harm. This is a top priority today. The safety of Lall, his family and the staff of Kaieteur News must be the number one priority.
If these things do not happen sooner rather than later, I will ask Glenn Lall to consider shutting down the newspaper, because there will be no other choice left open to him. This newspaper cannot continue to publish given the fears that exist now over the safety of Lall, his family and that of the staff of Kaieteur News. I reiterate, if these fears persist then the newspaper will have to be closed down.
I suppose that people will say that if Kaieteur News closes its doors that the tyrants would have prevailed, because this was what they wanted all along. But what other choice is there other than to close the newspaper down?
Safety comes first.
