A mechanic accused of pouncing on a couple and relieving them of their valuables at gunpoint before driving off with the car they were in, was yesterday remanded to prison.
Quacy Roberts, charged with three counts of robbery under arms, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the police, on October 18, last, at East La Penitence, Georgetown, armed with a gun, Roberts robbed Teresa Fredericks of a Samsung cellular phone, purse and $10,000 cash.
Roberts was accused too of robbing Jermaine Knights of a Samsung touch cellular phone and $43,000 as well as a Toyota Premio motorcar belonging to Troy King.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that Knights parked King’s car and was in it with Fredericks. He said that Roberts opened the car, pulled a gun on the duo, relieved them of the items and drove away with the car after putting them out.
He said that acting on information received, the accused was apprehended by the Police. According to Grant, Roberts assisted in recovering the car’s engine, while the shell of the said vehicle was recovered at another location. The prosecution said that Roberts had been identified by the victims.
Addressing the court, Roberts on the other hand, claimed that he had never been placed on an Identification (ID) parade. He said he was arrested by the police in Albouystown when they raided a house and found 45 spent shells.
He said that he had been remanded by the Chief Magistrate on a firearm and ammunition charge. Roberts insisted that he “never had any conflict with dem people.”
The Prosecutor told the court, however, that Roberts was known to the duo. He objected to bail stating that a firearm had been used in the commission of the offence.
Notwithstanding his pleas, Roberts was remanded to prison. The Prosecution was ordered to file statements and the case is set to be called again on November 17 for the filing of statements.
