In support of the two transgender Guyanese who were shot earlier this year
members of the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), Guyana Trans United (GTU) and members of the LBGT community of Guyana protested early yesterday morning at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
In the sweltering heat protestors came out and demanded to be seen and heard. In fear of being victimized many (LGBT) Guyanese already suffer a great deal of stigma and discrimination, being forced to keep their sexual orientation and gender identity secret.
Seyon Persaud, one of those shot, told Kaieteur News that in April earlier this year, he along with a friend who wished not to be identified were shot with a paintball gun by persons in a minibus.
The victims claimed that they have not received any justice for the trauma they endured. Ronald Beckles-Lamazon, 29, a youth representative at SASOD said, “We are here to support …and to be heard.”
Members of the LGBT community told this publication that they just want to be heard, and urge media houses to help them in their advocacy for justice against discrimination.
