A 27-year-old man has been charged for shooting a security guard attached to Bhena’s Footwear in a robbery attempt some eight months ago.
Eon Ambrose, of Lot 91 Sideline Dam, La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face two charges that stemmed from the incident.
The court heard that on February 2, at Middle Road, La Penitence he attempted to rob Omar Bynoe, 35, of Agricola, East Bank Demerara. Ambrose was charged too with discharging a loaded firearm at Bynoe with intent to maim, harm, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant said that Bynoe was dropping off one of his colleagues in La Penitence, when a gun-toting Ambrose approached and called him out of his car.
He said that Ambrose opened fire on Bynoe hitting him on his left shoulder. Bynoe, a licensed firearm holder, returned fire on Ambrose and his accomplice. The attackers, the Prosecution said, fled the scene that day.
Grant told the court that Bynoe was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The Prosecutor said that Ambrose and his accomplice avoided the clutches of the police for months despite several attempts to arrest them. He said that they recently managed to nab him and placed him on an Identification (ID) parade where the accused was fingered as one of Bynoe’s attackers.
Ambrose, the prosecutor said, was subsequently charged with attempted robbery and discharging a loaded firearm with intent. Responding to the charges in court yesterday, Ambrose pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Clive Forde, asked for him to be released on bail.
The Prosecutor, who objected, emphasised that extreme violence was used and the security guard was shot during the incident.
The Inspector said no firearm was recovered. He opined that he was a flight-risk who may run from facing the charges leveled against him.
Forde, the lawyer, said that Ambrose, a married man with one child, is employed at Rohan Security Service and had never been charged before. The lawyer argued that Ambrose was not a flight-risk.
Forde contended that when his client was taken to the police station he was subjected to a flawed ID parade.
The lawyer alleged that the victim was prompted by the police to point out Ambrose but the Prosecution debunked the lawyer’s claims.
Notwithstanding his application, bail was refused. The case was transferred to Magistrate Fabayo Azore and will be called for statements on November 13.
