A 27-year-old father of two accused of storming into a West Coast Demerara gas station five months ago and holding an employee at gunpoint before making off with the day’s sales, was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Kerwin Yearwood, of Lot 7 Ogle Street, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to respond to armed robbery charges.
The court heard that on May 22, last, Yearwood went into the Shell Gas Station in Vreed-en-Hoop, held Narendra Ramnauth at gunpoint and relieved him of $500,000. The booty, which belonged to Reyaad Hussain, was the gas station’s daily earnings.
The court heard that the father of two also relieved the employee of his cellular phone and other items before turning his gun on a customer and relieving him of his cash and a $5000 Nokia cellular phone.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that Yearwood then made off with the items and was arrested sometime after. He said that he was placed on an Identification (ID) parade where the two victims fingered him as the gun toting robber.
The Prosecution asked the court to consider that a firearm was used in the commission of the crime. He objected to bail too citing the nature, gravity and prevalence of gun crimes. He opined that the accused was a flight risk who would not return to face charges.
In an application for bail, Forde said that Yearwood, a father of two, had never been charged before. He argued that his client was not a flight-risk.
Forde claimed that the police ventured to his client’s house last Saturday and searched it before arresting him. He said that nothing was found there.
The lawyer alleged that when his client was taken to the police station he was subjected to a flawed ID parade. He claimed that the police prompted the victims to point out his client. However, the Prosecution debunked the lawyer’s claims.
Yearwood was remanded to prison and the case was transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for October 30.
