In honour of World Polio Day, celebrated annually on today’s date, the Rotary Club of Demerara has launched a fundraiser as part of Rotary International’s twenty-year mission to eradicate the crippling childhood disease.
The local rotary club is welcoming monetary donations to this cause. The President of Rotary Demerara, Gillian Mohabeer, is encouraging the public to ‘Fund the fight and join history.’
Since 1985, Rotary clubs worldwide have contributed nearly US$1.2B and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.
Polio, however, remains endemic in three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Other countries remain at risk for imported cases.
Polio is a highly infectious disease which causes paralysis. It is sometimes fatal. As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. For as little as 60 US cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against the disease for life.
Any donation can be sent to the club’s Republic Bank Account No. 652-621-4. The club’s Secretary, Renata Chuck-A-Sang or Treasurer, Lance Hinds can be contacted on 691-0442 and 684-4831/ 225-6027 respectively.
All proceeds will be used to help end Polio worldwide.
