‘Biggy’ Small and ‘AK’ on a collision course
More than 50 boxers from the country’s top gyms convened at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, Independence Boulevard, last evening to conform to the weigh in and medical examination before they are matched against their respective opponents in the National Open Boxing Championships scheduled to get underway at the M&CC Municipal Centre, California Square, East Ruimveldt tonight, with added action tomorrow night and with the finals scheduled for Sunday night.
The card consists of the country’s top boxers and fans can gear up for the highly anticipated slugfests as the respective pugilists are all nurturing the ambition of wearing the crown in their divisions. Despite such anticipation, the fight that seems to have caught the imagination of the pundits is the super/heavyweight clash between United States based super/heavyweight pugilist, Quincy ‘Biggy’ Small and Republican boxer, Jason ‘AK’ Barker.
These two boxers joined dozens of other pugilists and weighed in last evening at the nation’s premiere boxing gym. They exchanged acidic stares while sizing each other up as they took to the scales. Earlier, Small had elected to do some light work under the watchful eyes of Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan and his skin glistened with perspiration as he climbed onto the scale. Up to press time, the organizers were still engaged in the process of matching the boxers for tonight’s encounter but without a doubt ‘Biggy’ and ‘AK’ will square off on one of the three nights.
Participating boxers will be drawn from the nation’s top gyms including the Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Essequibo, Rose Hall Town Jammers, Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym and Carryll’s Boxing Gym among others.
The boxers will compete in 10 divisions in the elite category and these pugilists will now box devoid of the protective headgear; this in keeping with the new rules of the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA).However, the other categories would be exempted from this rule and will wear the protective gear. Additionally, IABA has agreed for elite boxers to use Cavelin Cream, a product that reduces the risks of cuts and bruises. President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle said that the product was to have arrived in the country sometime yesterday.
Several corporate entities have rendered support for the success of the tournament including the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Monty Profitt, Courts, BK International and Mike’s Pharmacy among others. Boxers residing in the rural communities will conform to the weigh in and medical examination process at 09:00hrs this morning, also at the same venue. Action time tonight is 20:00hrs sharp and admission is $400 and $200 for adults and children respectively.
